MOVIE: WALK HARD

about: Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story is a Golden Globe-nominated comedy film starring John C. Reilly in the title role and directed by Jake Kasdan. Judd Apatow, director of The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up , co-wrote and produced the film.

Dewey Cox personifies a number of prolific figures in rock history throughout the course of the movie—including Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, Jim Morrison, David Bowie, Brian Wilson, Ray Charles and Donovan—but mainly Johnny Cash. The plot is a close parallel of 2005's Walk the Line; Walk Hard is also a parody of the biopic genre as a whole. (Characters explicitly state their ages, refer to each other by full—"Hullo, John Lennon; I'm Ringo Starr"—names.)

my review: Spoof movies don't come along very often and when they do we tend to be very skeptical about them. Airplane! (which was great) started it, the Scary Movies (which were good) made them popular again and the recent ones like The Comebacks and Superhero Movie are just continuing to give the spoof movie genre a bad name.

But when you think about it, it seems like it must be pretty hard to put a movie like those together. It just all comes down to who is doing it and how. That's why I got excited when I saw the trailer for Walk Hard because here is a spoof movie directed by the son of director Lawrence Kasdan, written and produced by Judd Apatow. Starring the awesome John C. Reilly and many of the actors from camp Apatow. So how could it step wrong.

Well, I'm sad to report that it does. It's not a great movie but its not bad either. Many of the jokes are too obvious and some continue even after we already got it despite the fact that they weren't funny the first time. The funny jokes come from the one liners and the bad ones come from the obvious sight gags. There are times when the movie feels like it is trying to hard to make us laugh and doesn't know when to stop.

What I did like was all the musical genres and decades the movie goes through as Dewey Cox changes from each one and also the music. The music is great. Going into it I expected the music to contain funny lyrics and that would be it, but the music itself is pretty great. I think the music is better than the movie actually. Kind of like what happened to The Mighty Wind. I liked the music so much that my next post will be for the Walk Hard soundtrack.

I enjoyed myself while watching Walk Hard but I can't say that I would enjoy it a second time. But listening to the soundtrack is a different matter.
