ABOUT: Semi-Pro is a 2008 comedy film from New Line Cinema. The film was directed by Kent Alterman and stars Will Ferrell, Andre Benjamin, Will Arnett, Woody Harrelson, Maura Tierney, Andrew Daly, David Koechner, and Nick Brambila. The movie was shot in Los Angeles near Dodger Stadium (in the gym of the Los Angeles City Fire Department Training Center), in Detroit and in Flint, Michigan.

Semi-Pro is an outrageous comedy set in 1976 against the backdrop of the maverick ABA--a fast-paced, wild and crazy basketball league that rivaled the NBA. It made a name for itself with such innovations as the three-point shot and slam-dunk contest. Will Ferrell plays Jackie Moon, a one-hit wonder who used the profits from the success of his chart-topping song "Love Me Sexy" to achieve his dream of owning a basketball team. But Moon's franchise, the Flint Michigan Tropics, is the worst team in the league and in danger of folding when the ABA announces its plans to merge with the NBA. If they want to survive, Jackie and the Tropics must now do the seemingly impossible--win.

MY REVIEW: In my eyes Will Ferrell can do no wrong, but I don't think he is invincible. He proves that with Semi-Pro which I think is a good movie but its not Ferrell at his best. The movie is filled with jokes, gags and actors from other Ferrell movies but for some reason it doesn't seem to be trying.

The movie is rated R and it earns it. I think that's a big mistake because Ferrell is more at home with the PG-13 rating and when he is doing something that warrants an R it just seems weird and vulgar. Especially to hear him curse and to have sex jokes on top of sex jokes. I don't mind some good cursing or some good sex jokes but when its in a comedy with Will Ferrell and his troupe, it doesn't fit.

There are some scenes that work and others that don't. All the great comedic actors in it, including Ferrell, don't seem to be trying or look like they want to be in the movie. With some good laughs and to see Jackie Earle Haley in a Will Ferrell comedy is enough to recommend it but don't expect your usual Will Ferrell brand of humor.

There are more bonus features on the DVD then there are sex jokes in the movie. You've got deleted and alternate scenes. Improv scenes which are better than the deleted ones. Behind the scenes stuff, a music video for the song "Love Me Sexy" and a fake documentary about the song. Oh yeah, and a trailer.

MY CHEESY RATING: Semi-Pro is only semi there with a 6 out of 10.
